What music do I like?
Ask any DJ what music they like and the standard answer is usually "I like all sorts of music"…BORING! In this post I'll reveal the type of music I like and why it's important to know!

One of the most common questions I get asked as a wedding DJ is:
What kind of music do you like?
Now, most DJs will respond with a generic answer like “Oh, I like anything really” or “I have to like everything” and whilst those might seem like fair answers, I think it’s a missed opportunity, both for the DJ and for the client asking the question.
Why does a DJ’s taste in music matter?
You might be thinking, “We don’t care what the DJ likes, we just want them to play what WE like!” and that’s completely valid, but the way a DJ answers this question tells you a lot about their passion for music, their depth of musical knowledge, and their ability to create an atmosphere.
A DJ who truly loves music will love being asked about their favourite genres or artists. They’ll be able to talk about different styles, how music works together and the psychology behind making sure that everyone, from your grandparents to your uni mates having a great time on the dance floor.
The difference between a music lover and a button pusher
A DJ who simply plays whatever you tell them to isn’t bringing much to the table beyond pressing play on his DJ kit. A DJ who genuinely understands and loves music will take your suggestions and create a seamless, energetic, unforgettable experience. They know how to blend songs, keep the energy flowing and adapt to the crowd in real-time.
What to listen for in their answer
When you ask a DJ about their music taste, listen for enthusiasm and variety. A DJ who says something like “I’m really into funk and soul, but I also love classic rock and modern pop” shows that they think about music in a meaningful way. If they can talk about why certain songs work well together or how different genres create different moods, that’s a great sign that they really know what they’re talking about.
This kind of response tells you that the DJ has actually spent time exploring different genres and understands what makes them special. It also usually means that they’ve spent years listening to and enjoying that kind of music.
Questions to ask your DJ
If you want to get a real sense of a DJ’s passion and style, try asking:
- What’s your favourite genre to mix?
- What’s a song you always love throwing into a set?
- How do you keep a dance floor packed when the energy starts to dip?
These kinds of questions will give you a much clearer picture of whether your DJ is there to hit buttons on his equipment or if they truly understand how to create an unforgettable night.

At the end of the day, the music you choose for your party should reflect you and your style, but hiring a DJ who has real musical passion and knowledge will make all the difference in how smoothly the night flows, how engaged your guests are and how unforgettable those dance floor moments become.
